Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union: Something Kabataan Pantylist Can Only Dream Of Becoming

And no, Alice Guo wasn't a member of Kabataan Pantylist!

The Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union or simply the Youth Union (Doan Thanh Nien), was established on March 26, 1931. It's pretty funny how Kabataan Pantylist was established on June 19, 2001. It would be the year of the Vietnam Youth Union's 70th anniversary. Coincidence? Maybe, maybe not. The late Joma Sison was inspired by the Vietnam War. However, Joma failed to capture what made Ho Chi Minh a great Communist revolutionary.

As Vladimir Lenin said, "Give me a generation of youth and I'll transform the world." Hence, Uncle Ho took that to heart during the Vietnam War. These are the previous names of the Youth Union:
  1. 26/3/1931 - 1936 : Indochina Communist Youth Union (Đoàn Thanh niên Cộng sản Đông Dương)
  2. 1936 - 11/1939: Indochina Democratic Youth Union (Đoàn Thanh niên Dân chủ Đông Dương)
  3. 11/1939 - 5/1941: Indochina Anti-Imperialist Youth Union (Đoàn Thanh niên Phản đế Đông Dương)
  4. 5/1941 - 25/10/1956: Vietnam National Salvation Youth Union (Đoàn Thanh niên Cứu quốc Việt Nam)
  5. 25/10/1956 - 2/1970: Vietnam Labour Youth Union (Đoàn Thanh niên Lao động Việt Nam)
  6. 2/1970 - 11/1976: Ho Chi Minh Labour Youth Union (Đoàn Thanh niên Lao động Hồ Chí Minh)
  7. 12/1976-now: Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union (Đoàn Thanh niên Cộng sản Hồ Chí Minh)
It wasn't until 1976 (during the martial law era of the Philippines) that the Youth Union got its alias as the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union. The Youth Union was founded by Uncle Ho and went to evolve overtime.

Why do the youths wear the color blue?

Here's an explanation from the comrades of Quy Nhon University:

Meaningful color of blue shirts

The shirt is only in one color but its color has many layers of meaning. It may be the "blue color of youth", because it is not known whether it is intentional or not, the color of the Youth Union shirt is the same as that of the sky and the sea. The blue color of the sky is a vast space for the youth to spread their wings to fly and reach new horizons. The blue color of the sea is the waves, the brave and resilient temperament of the youth, constantly improving themselves, and striving for glorious deeds. The blue color of the Youth Union shirt and that of the sky and the sea blend together to create the blue color of the youth, enthusiasm and ambition.

Young people, healthy and enthusiastic, always want to devote themselves to society. That's why the blue color is also called "volunteer green". Imbued with the ideal "Where there is a need, young people will come. Where difficulties arise, young people are ready to cope with them", Quy Nhon University’s Youth Union members have brought the blue color to every corner of the country.

The aim of the Youth Union

The Youth Union would be best described as follows by the Communist state law:

Under the Charter of the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union adopted by the XI National Congress of the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union on 13/12/2017 as follows:

Members of the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union are advanced Vietnamese youths, striving for the goals and ideals of the Communist Party of Vietnam and President Ho Chi Minh, with the spirit of patriotism and national self-reliance; lead a healthy, frugal, honest lifestyle; be active and exemplary in study, labor, social activities and defend the Fatherland, closely associated with youths; strictly abide by the laws of the State and the Charter of the Union.

Specifically, in Article 1 of the Charter of the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union:

Article 1:

1. Members of the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union are advanced Vietnamese youths striving for the purposes and ideals of the Communist Party of Vietnam and President Ho Chi Minh, possessing the spirit of patriotism and national self-reliance; lead a healthy, frugal, honest lifestyle; be active and exemplary in study, labor, social activities and defend the Fatherland, closely associated with youths; strictly abide by the laws of the State and the Charter of the Union.
2. Vietnamese youths aged between 16 and 30, who actively study, work and defend the Fatherland, learn about the Union and approve its Charter, voluntarily operate in a grassroots organization of the Union, and have clear backgrounds shall be considered for admission to the Union.

Engaging in civic activities is part of the Youth Union. The Youth Union doesn't shy away in youth recruitment programs. Its aim is to teach children to become responsible members of the proletariat. Youth members are being trained to give a hands-on approach to teaching Communism to children, do menial jobs as important (ex, cleaning, cooking, food distribution), rescue activities, and the like. Of course, many Youth Union volunteers look forward to their productive summers during Mua He Xanh. Mua He Xanh 2025 is coming soon. More Youth Union volunteers are getting ready for another productive summer.

As Youth Month goes on, it's important to emulate the Youth Union -- NOT Kabataan Pantylist!
